End of Term Newsletter Aug’15

We are fast approaching the end of this current term and will soon be starting our Sep/Oct term!

We have had much success with our summer courses with lots of senior students greatly improving their skills for the upcoming seminar here in Ireland in October.

Regular senior classes have also been popular and as expected student numbers are growing as we approach the month of September.

Junior members have had a huge break over the summer but as they return to school we look forward to welcoming them back into class!

Great news is that we have almost signed the rental lease for our new permanent home in the business park. We should get the keys mid September once everything goes to plan. This means that we can fully kit out the premises with our mats & training equipment etc…we may even put in a tea/coffee station for the parents!

We will also be opening our physical training to anyone interested in taking part. This will take place every Tuesday & Thursday before the senior kung fu class & will introduce a calisthenics (Body Weight) training programme to everyone no matter their age or fitness level. Register your interest now to guarantee a place!

These changes will see some adjustments to the current timetable. Please see below:

Junior Kung Fu Classes             6:15 – 7:00

Calisthenics Training                  7:15 – 8:15

Senior Kung Fu Classes             8:15 – 9:15

Don’t forget to book your places in the new term through our website as usual www.ymaagorey.ie

Please note all members choosing to ‘pay as they go’ will now be charged €8 per class. To still avail of great savings pay per term through our website link above.

See you all in Class!

End of Term Newsletter June’15

YMMA Gorey

We’re coming to the end of our longest term and soon start into the summer break!

With the junior programme finishing up and not starting back until September we have decided to use their class slots to host our 8 week summer courses. Meaning senior members can now train extra long sessions both Tuesdays & Thursdays in preparation for the October seminar/grading. (Any parents interested in their child attending these courses from 6:30-7:30 should talk with me in class)

The big change this term has been our relocation to the Gorey Business Park. I’m hoping this suits everybody as we plan to stay here up until the September term. Come September we are going to need to decide where we want to be based up until the end of the year. If member numbers increase significantly, which I’m very hopeful they will, we could be looking at finally moving to a permanent home!

Parents may have noticed some of the senior members helping out with the junior classes? This is something much needed as the classes grow not only in numbers but in varying skill levels. I ask you to please bear with us while they familiarize themselves with the junior programme and work on improving their teaching skills.

Along with the help of these senior members and the introduction of the tutorial videos there is no longer any excuses for junior members not to progress through their stripes!

Visible changes within the upcoming September term will be the planned introduction of optional light sparring for both experienced juniors and senior members. This will teach the students to apply their fighting techniques in a more realistic situation. Opening a door through which YMAA Gorey can attend and compete in the numerous fighting events around Ireland.

Please don’t forget we have our Film Club night the 03rd of July. Which is absolutely free to all term paying members. Just please take the time to book your place through our website so I can order enough popcorn and soft drinks for everyone 

Senior members should now be rebooking their places for the Aug-July term as well as the summer courses.

Junior members can also now rebook for their upcoming September term. These places will go on general release very soon and should fill up very quickly.

Finally: whether you’re choosing to train with us over the next two months or take a well deserved break. Let’s hope the sun makes regular visits so we can all get outside, keeping fit & healthy!

Kid’s Newsletter – Where we are & Where we are heading…. Jan-Mar’15

YMMA Gorey

Where we are & Where we are heading

It’s been three years since our kung fu school was first established here in Gorey. Within this time we have learnt so many things, gained a better insight into where we are heading & thankfully continued to expand our numbers. Much appreciation for this must go out to the adult education courses. For without the opportunity they presented to us three years ago, along with their continued support & patience, we wouldn’t be where we are today.

Last year saw the arrival of our high quality training mats which have greatly affected the quality of our training. On a negative note: this purchase seriously depleted our clubs savings.  However, through the growing numbers of students, as well as the support of existing members buying our new club t-shirts, we should very quickly rebuild our resources to purchase much needed equipment like kick shield & punch pads; taking our training to the next level. So far all profits made have been ploughed back into developing the club. We pledge to continue this until everything is in place for us to be recognised as one of the best martial arts clubs in Ireland!

The current term has been one of our shortest but the next term brings us one of the longest. This new term will see us right through to the summer holidays, where we break for two months. This long run up to the holidays brings great opportunities for students to complete their current stripe, particularly those training twice a week. To aid this progression we will also be releasing our much awaited kids kung fu tutorial videos. This will allow parents and children to work together on upcoming gradings outside of class.

We’d also like to take this opportunity to thank the parents and families of our kung fu kids for their continued support. Every week your children spend in class not only increases the current knowledge & skills within the club it also lays down a foundation for this next generation of kung fu practitioners & teachers. With the schools overriding goal to encourage them to improve on what has gone before & further evolve this fascinatingly deep & rewarding art form.

Newsletter – A Look Back Over the Term – Mar-Jun’14

So far we have had a very eventful term that has presented lots of encouraging changes and opportunities: first of all I’d like to celebrate the growing numbers of kung fu kids and parents with out whom we would have never been able to cover our growing costs and begin to break even as an emerging club. Much effort will be made over the summer break to keep this momentum going so we all return to full kids classes in September (Please refer to our online calendar for class timetable.)

Now that we have mentioned it, lets talk about our online store: its original purpose was to sell training aids, weapons, uniforms etc. Creating another income stream, outside of membership fees, to better secure our position as a viable business. This will be achieved through the introduction of many more quality products over the next six months that will help build our reputation within the Irish martial arts world. However, we have also decided to use the store for the rebooking of term membership. Giving members the option to pay via credit card, bank transfer or cheque. Removing the messiness of handling cash at the start of every class. Check it out on our website!

After our successful kung fu presentation to the Gorey Community School transition year students, we have put together a good group of teenagers all training hard to be the next generation of kung fu teachers. Their presence also means we have bridged the gap between the kids and adults programme. Allowing children from the age of seven to now progress with their training right through to old age. Show your support by checking out the teens experiences through the blogs they post to our website.

Im happy to announce that due to our growing size we have now been officially welcomed into the YMAA International family by becoming a recognised Irish YMAA club. This brings great rewards by reducing the cost of attending the many seminars and summer camps held in Ireland, UK and europe. Also all Gorey members working on the YMAA syllabus can officially grade at all events, with their rank being recognised world wide. On a less positive note the additional costs associated with these changes to the club have forced us to increase the cost of attending adult classes from 6 to 8 euros. However, additional savings can still be made by paying for each term through the online store.

I’d like to remind the kids & parents about the approaching gradings that take place on the last class of your current term. This class will begin earlier than usual at the time of six o’clock. This is so every child gets allotted enough time to complete the lengthy process of grading. We ask for silence during the grading so please tell the children to show respect to their other class mates when not participating in certain sections of the grading.

Lastly I’d like to thank everyone that has joined me on this journey so far; I’ve promised much development and progression and I hope that you have all witnessed this. Let me reassure you that this is only the start of what can be taught. Over the next six months we are going to intensify the training by introducing weekend seminars where we can focus for many hours on specific subjects. This will see the skill level at YMAA Gorey grow to an excellent level and bring us much closer to our goals.

No excuses, just train!

See you all in class. Jonathan Luff (YMAA Gorey Director)
